4.  Alberta 4-H Membership Fee Increase

Effective for the 2010-2011 4-H Club Year, the 4-H membership fee will increase to $55 per member in each 4-H club. Annual cost increases in goods, services, and program related expenditures necessitated this change in membership fees. This fee is payable annually to the 4-H Foundation of Alberta and is paid upon the registration of the 4-H Club.

The Alberta 4-H membership fee is used to:

  • Ensure effective promotion and marketing of the Alberta 4-H program
  • Provide programming and support to 4-H members and leaders at the regional and provincial level
  • Keep the Alberta 4-H program relevant and meaningful to Alberta’s rural youth.
  • Ensure up-to-date, leading edge, and relevant project materials and resources for 4-H Clubs
  • Support other areas of Alberta 4-H as determined by the Alberta 4-H Partners (Branch, Council, Foundation) representatives.

The 4-H membership fee last increased in the 2006-2007 club year when the current $40 per member/per club was established. Upon the annual registration of a 4-H Club, the membership fee is paid to the 4-H Foundation of Alberta. This membership fee does not pay for permanent staff nor related staffing costs which are covered by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development or the 4-H Foundation of Alberta.

As a 4-H Family, it is our hope that the Alberta 4-H program continues to be recognized for its excellence in leadership and technical skill development, and as the premier organization for developing marketable skills and expertise in our youth and adult leaders. The 4-H membership fees collected annually provide the means to deliver a quality 4-H program. We are looking forward to a dynamic 2010-2011 club year!

May 31, 2010

As we start to hit the Achievement Days and Show and Sale season, best of luck to each and every 4-H member and congratulations for all of your hard work throughout the 2009/2010 club year!  And a huge thank you to all of the leaders and parents who helped!  Well done.

Here's a few things that you may wish to note, and share with your fellow 4-H members, clubs, district councils and parents:

1.  There are some districts still looking for new DISTRICT KEY MEMBERS for the 2010/2011 club year.  Contact your district council for further information.

Based on past experience, it has been noted that the most successful districts utilize more than one Key Member at any given time, whether it be two new or one experienced and one new.  This allows more flexibility for the members and clubs in hosting workshops, but also allows the members an opportunity to vet ideas and tasks with a peer.  With this said, please do what is best for the structure of your district.

If you would like more information on Key Member training it can be found on the 4-H website at www.4h.ab.ca

Kindly submit the names of your Key Member(s) by July 1, 2010 via email: Leila.hickman@gov.ab.ca ; phone: (780)853-8115 or by fax: (780)853-4776.

Just a reminder to members - if you are interested in becoming a KEY MEMBER for your district, PLEASE APPLY!  It is a fantastic opportunity!  Key Member Training, August 20 – 22, 2010 at Lakeland College, Vermilion AB

2.  Southern 4-H Regional Horse Show August 15 to 18, Claresholm.  Horse project club leaders, (the club contacts) will be receiving club entry packages in the mail this week!  If you don't receive your envelope, which will need to be copied and shared with your club members, please watch for it to be posted under the Southern Region calendar of events on the 4-H website soon.

This year, there will the added feature of Equine Learning Evenings.  You DO NOT have to participate in the horse show to take in the learning opportunities.  Great Fun!  Watch for the poster!

3.   Alberta 4-H Membership Fee Increase:

Effective for the 2010-2011 4-H Club Year, the 4-H membership fee will increase to $55.00 per member in each 4-H club.

The 4-H membership fee last increased in the 2006-2007 club year when the current $40.00 per member / per club was established.

4.  Still room in most Provincial 4-H Summer Programs

Although the deadline to register for the 'personal development' summer programs passed on May 15th, we would rather see them full so we are still accepting applications for all but Junior Camp.  There is limited space in Combined Camp 3 and LTCS, and Club Week is getting fuller everyday (YAY!) so if you want to attend, please act quickly.  No 4-H member's summer is complete without a summer program personal development opportunity, so please take advantage of these great programs in 2010!

5.  The 1st Annual Provincial 4-H Horse Show - Tuesday, August 10 to Thursday, August 12 (move in on Monday August 9) will take place at the Olds Agricultural Society Grounds.

Cost = $50 per horse/rider combination for the entire 3 day show or $10 per class  and Stalling - $50 per horse

For 4-H horse project members from across Alberta registered in Levels 4 to 7 in the 2009/2010 club year and in good standing within their club.

Entry forms available at www.4h.ab.ca or contact Linda Gooch at 403-534-3823 or email goochdl@gmail.com.

6.  Scholarship opportunity for 4-H graduates attending University of Alberta:

I just finished my first year of university at the University of Alberta, and am in charge of a provincial-wide scholarship program, the Jonathan Doody Memorial Scholarship. I have decided to contact 4-H clubs, since many young men of high character are members of these organizations. Applying for this scholarship has been an incredible experience.

Each year, Phi Gamma Delta, a philanthropist organization of the University of Alberta, provides two scholarships of $750 to outstanding incoming students at the University of Alberta. In past years, the application was completed by paper; however, applicants now have the choice to complete an online version. The website address for the scholarship is http://phigam.ca/info/the-johnathan-doody-memorial-scholarship/.

Students must fill out two short one-page essays on the topic of friendship, knowledge, service, morality and excellence, provide high school transcripts and complete a few short-answer questions. Previous scholarship winners have become notable leaders in the university community.

The interviewers become university mentors to the applicants, who often take leadership roles in student government, athletics and academics. Also, I believe that this is a good chance for young 4-H leaders to earn extra money in scholarships, for those that are going on to university.

Cheers,

Emerson Csorba

5.  The Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association presents the 27th annual Ride For Dreams fundraiser with a special invitation to 4-H clubs:

The Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association provides horseback riding opportunities to individuals who have health challenges that would otherwise make it difficult to ride.  We run the program with over 70 volunteers but also need to fund raise in order to buy horses, feed, lifts, pay veterinary bills, etc.

Our main fund raiser is a trail ride, this year on Saturday June 5th.  It is a fun day ending up with a barbecue at the Rainbow Riding Center.  It includes prizes for those raising the most money.  This year, thanks to Tim Horton's, we will have a draw for a saddle among the top 10 fund raisers, as well as other prizes.

If your 4-H club would like to help us and have a great day of riding, scenery, visiting, food, and prizes, please call our office for entry forms at 403 328 2165.

6.  Inbound Japanese Exchange Hosting Opportunity

While six Alberta 4-H members are enthusiastically waiting to travel with seven other youth from across Canada this July for their outbound exchange to Japan, 20 young Japanese students are hoping to spend a month in Alberta as a member of a host family.

The incoming Japanese delegates have a cross section of interests, from sports, music, arts, computers, crafts, to camping, cooking, fishing and shopping. Most of the delegates are 12 and 13 years olds who want first-hand experience of Canadian culture and to increase their English language skills.

Families with 4-H members who are 10 to 13 years old will usually be a good age match for these visitors and hosting is a great way for 4-H members to build relationships for future outbound exchanges. We are currently looking for families interested in hosting from July 27 to August 22. There are only 3 boys 9 girls left, so if you would like the opportunity to enrich your children’s lives though a cultural exchange, please contact your 4-H Specialist or a Regional Exchange Co-ordinator, as listed in the 4-H Magazine.

Hurry! It’s first come, first served!

news RELEASE

International Youth Livestock Show enhanced by new partnership

Calgary – The Calgary Stampede and Olds Agricultural Society are pleased to announce an innovative partnership that will result in a fresh and exciting new direction for the popular International Youth Livestock Show.

In year’s past, the International Youth Livestock Show has been an integral part of the annual Calgary Stampede, with competition taking place over the last four days of The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.  Approximately 90 participants, mostly from communities in Central Alberta, competed in the annual show with special guests from across Canada and the US.

This year, under the new partnership and with the support of Alberta 4-H and Alberta Junior Beef Breed Associations, a much larger, intense and integrated competition will take place at Olds Agricultural Society from July 11 to 16, with the winners in several categories moving on to a Supreme Championship Final at the Calgary Stampede on Saturday, July 17.  Over 250 competitors from across western Canada are expected to participate in this collaborative programming between Calgary Stampede and Olds Agricultural Society.

“The International Youth Livestock Show is an engaging way to showcase the keen and knowledgeable future youth of agriculture,” says Tracy Lundago, chair of the Stampede International Youth Livestock Show committee. “This new format will allow us to increase industry awareness, act as a conduit between industry and youth and reward personal development and achievement from competitors across Canada and around the world.”

Young enthusiasts demonstrate their stewardship skills in sheep, dairy cattle, heavy horse or beef species classes and will compete this year for more than $30,000 in scholarship money and prizes.

“Agriculture and youth programs are fundamental to preserving and promoting western heritage and values,” says David Sibbald, Calgary Stampede board director, who has been very involved in the redevelopment of the program. “The Stampede takes a serious role in showcasing the agriculture industry.”

This unique and dynamic program is the first of its kind to elevate and enhance opportunities and experiences for all livestock youth and will remain steadfast and sustainable within industry.

4. A note to all 4-H Clubs from the 4-H Foundation: This year, you will notice that we are sending the individual sponsor support cheques out for clubs, districts and regions as separate cheques.

We are doing this for the following reasons - clubs need the specific dollars at different times (i.e. AltaLink at public speaking / presentation times.), we receive sponsorship funds at different times, sponsor funds at club, district and regional levels are constantly evolving (we will keep you informed on any changes of level amounts or new sponsors) plus we have heard feedback from clubs that receiving all the money and information at the same time is overwhelming.

We hope that by sending the sponsor cheques out individually that the intent of the specific funds is highlighted, that clubs and councils read the attached letters at their meetings and that increased exposure occurs for the sponsors. Please remember to thank our sponsors!

5. The Southern Regional Communications 2010 competition sponsored by AltaLink and KPMG will take place at the Medicine Hat College on Saturday, March 20, 2010. Dec 2009

21 more sleeps until Christmas. Can you believe it?

Hopefully, your 4-H club has submitted your fall registration by the December 1st deadline to avoid a late penalty. Some of you will still receive this email blast, as the data is undergoing many updates within our 4-H system with registration, as is my email list, but I am honestly trying to continually update the recipient list.

Please remember to share this information, within your club and your district, as there are changes to the people on every level. Welcome to new members, leaders, and key leaders!

This will be another great year for 4-H. The purpose of this email blast is to get some of the information "out there", as another source working alongside your leaders, key leaders, district and regional councils. Information included here addresses events that are forthcoming that you may be interested in - at either an individual, club, district, regional or provincial level.

I try to keep the information brief, but will, on occasion due to time constraints, be attaching some forms - without graphics to keep the size acceptable, even on dialup.

Here goes:
1. Regional Multi-Species Judging - sponsored by MNP (Meyers Norris Penny) - Saturday, January 2nd in Brooks at the Silver Sage Arena. Registration is at 10 am, Judging to start at 11 am. There will be a concession available throughout the day, and lunch will be available for the contestants. This is the first of two regional judging competitions, in our region in 2010 - both sponsored by MNP.

2. Hurricane Hockey - the 9th Annual - Saturday, January 30th. Game is versus the Prince Albert Raiders. Game time 7pm. Pre-game - 6:30 pm. Please note that this year, there will NOT be any food vouchers, or pre-game meal available with the tickets, due to construction limitations at the Enmax Center.
For each club leader - here is a form for your club. PLEASE SUBMIT ONLY ONE ORDER PER CLUB, for all members, parents, families within your club, along with one cheque. Thanks.

3. Snowfest 2010 - February 12 - 14, 2010 at Whispering Pines Bible Camp, Elkwater Alberta. For junior or intermediate 4-H members. The registration form - attached - deadline is January 25th. We are hoping for numbers to justify our rental of a bus, for transportation (Lethbridge east to Elkwater) - a great, camping experience without difficulty in getting there - a great opportunity! $125 per member, with additional costs for either skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing - depending on your choice. Also - any senior members interested in applying to counsel for the weekend - please use the same registration form and submit it by fax to the Lethbridge 4-H office at 403-382-4526. Previous attendance at LTCS is requred for counselors and the number of counselors needed for the weekend depends entirely on the number of campers attending.

4. ATCO is challenging Alberta's youth to tell how they are getting involved in their communities. WIN A TRIP TO VANCOUVER FOR THE OLYMPICS! Students in grades 4 to 12 are invited to describe in 150 to 650 words how they pursue leadership and strive for excellence in sports, arts, culture, education or community involvement. Visit www.atco.com for more details and to submit your composition.

5. Wanted - a few great young men and women for 4-H Summer Staff employment opportunities - now posted on the 4-H website www.4h.ab.ca and at most post-secondary facilities. Available positions: Summer Program Assistants, Project Coordinator, Lifeguards, Travel Coordinator, Communications and Marketing Assistant. Applicants must have completed one year of post secondary education. Application deadline is January 15, 2010.

6. The Classroom Agriculture Program (CAP) is a fantastic program that provides grade 4 students across the province the opportunity to learn more about how agriculture impacts their life. This program relies on a dedicated group of volunteers to not only facilitate the one hour long classroom presentations but also a group of zone coordinators that coordinate and liaison between the presentation volunteers and the schools in each zone. The program is rewarding for all involved. This year we are looking for zone coordinators in a number of regions as well as additional volunteers to assist with the program across the province.

The CAP program aligns well with the Alberta 4H program, providing alumni, leaders and members the opportunity to be activity involved in sharing some of the passion and dedication they have for agriculture. The volunteers in CAP all have unique presentations because each one focuses on their own specialty, whether it is animals, crops or the environment, but in the end they have a common message – that agriculture plays a very important role in students’ daily lives and in Alberta’s economy. Training is provided to the volunteers and well as resource materials.

I would appreciate if the information on the CAP program could be made available to members and leaders in your region through your email blasts. Further information regarding the different volunteer positions are attached. For senior members, this is a wonderful way to expand their community service.

Nov 2009

October flew right on by, on witches' brooms! Here is a new email blast, with hopefully something good for everyone. This is sent to all recorded leaders and members of 2008/2009, with updates that I have been advised of. Please pass this along to new members, leaders and parents in your club, and be patient, as updates to the mailing list are ongoing, with a complete new download to be done in December/January to catch new members, and remove outgoing members.

1. Mark Sayers, Provincial Council representative from the Southern Region has requested that all district councils, respond to the request for input circulated from the Provincial Council. Their questionnaire was titled "Implenting a Cloverbud Program" and asked 4 questions that district councils were to ask of their clubs. Please contact Mark at 403-320-8405 or via email @ mlazys@telus.net with your club/district's views, or to discuss further, if you have not already done so.

2. Southern Regional Horse Committee meeting - Tuesday, November 17th at 7pm in the Taber Police Station basement. Books that were judged in the Regional Horse record book competition will be available there for pickup (congratulations to all of the competitors and award recipients!). Please ensure that each club offering the horse project has an adult representative (not necessarily a leader) in attendance. This is a very active project committee but needs to ensure participation and input from all clubs within the region to successfully continue offering horse related events, including the Record book competition, Horse Learning Day and the Regional horse show to name a few.
For the 2009/2010 club year, the fees due to the Southern 4-H Regional Light Horse Committee will be $5 per horse project member, and double to $10 per horse project member if not paid by the January 2010 Horse Committee meeting.
Please remember a motion from the October 2008 Southern 4-H Regional Council meeting:
that any and all fees from Members or Clubs for 4-H sanctioned events at all levels, (Club, District, Regional and Provincial) must be paid in full for said Member or Club to be eligible for future 4-H sanctioned events put on by any level.
Fees can be mailed to the Horse Committee treasurer, Coreen Unruh, Box 30, Hays, AB TOK IBO
Elections will be taking place at this meeting for the 2009/2010 year. There are only 4 meetings throughout the year - November, January, April and August.

3. The Regional Council is looking for some new faces! These people do not necessarily have to attend the Regional council meetings, but Council would like new interested individuals to work on the various committees, benefitting the Southern region members and leaders. If you are interested, or would like further information, please contact your local district council representative, or the Regional office. ALL DISTRICTS NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN COMMITTEE WORK IN ORDER TO MAKE ALL EVENTS SUCCESSFUL AND NOT TO BURN OUT A FEW VOLUNTEERS. SPREADING OUT THE WORKLOAD HELPS EVERYONE!And it's fun too!
