Northwest 4-H Region Programs



The Northwest regional 4-H committees organize programs for members and leaders. Some program hosting is assigned to districts.

Northwest 4-H Region Programs

Communication Competitions

For the communication competitions the region is divided into two groups:

  • East Half: Athabasca, Westlock, Thorhild, Sturgeon, Strathcona, Leduc
  • West Half: Barrhead, Lac Ste Anne, Evansburg, Parkland, Drayton Valley, Yellowhead

Public Speaking

  • Two regional competitions - 12 districts divided by east and west locations
  • One Senior, one Intermediate & one Junior member each qualify through
    for regional level
  • Held on a Saturday in March
  • District rotation for hosting
    2010 Hosts: Lac Ste Anne/Leduc - March 13

Presentations

  • Two regional competitions - 12 districts divided by east and west locations
  • One Senior, one Intermediate and one Junior presentation qualify through district competition for regional level
  • Held on a Saturday in late February
  • District rotation for hosting
    2010 Hosts: Strathcona/Yellowhead - February 27

Frosty Fun Winter Camp

  • Weekend camp for intermediate and senior members (12 years of age as of Jan 1st)
  • Outdoor sports and games, 4-H awareness, crafts and personal development sessions
  • Held in February - Friday to Sunday
  • Staffed by the Northwest 4-H Alumni
    Date: Feb 5-7 at Camp Nakamun

Summer Camp - Camp Mackinicholea

  • Five day camp
  • Open to members 9 to 11 years
  • Held in mid August
  • Staffed by 4-H Summer Staff, senior 4-H members and volunteer adults
    Junior Camp August 17-21

Summer Camp - Camp Wohelo

  • Five day camp
  • Open to members 12 to 14 years
  • Held in mid August
  • Staffed by 4-H Summer Staff, senior 4-H members and volunteer adults
    Intermediate Camp August 9-13

Regional 4-H Fair

  • One day event for members and leaders in life skills and other animals projects
  • Workshop sessions
  • Bench show of craft, clothing, food, photography, woodworking, etc.
  • Held third Saturday in November
  • Hosted by different districts
    Hosts: Bon Accord - November 28

Focus on 4-H

  • Three day multi projects and activities
  • Includes regional shows, workshops, competitions and recreation activities
  • Judging Event
  • Canine, Dairy, Lama, Sheep and Goat Shows
  • Regional Light Horse Show
    • English, western, gymkhana and fun
  • Regional Beef Heifer Show
    • Heifer, cow/calf, team grooming, showmanship, marketing and costume
  • Life Skills Show
    • Workshops and competitions
    • Bench show and displays
  • Canine Show
    • Agility and obedience trails, costume
  • Sheep and Goat Show
    • Conformation, showmanship and novelty
  • Schedule of Events
  • Organized by general volunteer committee; project events organized by committees selected by Northwest regional project committees
  • Dates: July 2-4 TBA

Judging Competition

  • For all members in region
  • Ten classes: five livestock classes and craft, food, grains or mystery classes
  • Individual judging
  • Qualifying round for provincial competition for senior members
  • Held on a Saturday in late April
  • Organized by committee composed of district representatives
    April 17 - TBA

Project Workshops and Clinics

  • Project clinics for Leaders
  • Number and time vary each year
  • Organized by Northwest Project Committees - Beef, Horse, Lifeskills Projec
Record Book Competitions

Beef:

  • Steer, heifer, and novice beef and cow/calf record books
  • Top junior, intermediate and senior steer and heifer books from each district; top Sr. cow calf and top Jr/ Int. cow/calf books, top Novice calf book
  • Judged in November and awarded at the Regional Heifer Show.
    Due date: September 30

Horse:

  • One junior, one intermediate and one senior record book per horse project club
  • Judged at Regional Horse Show
    Due date: October 15

Life Skills and Other Animals:

  • Top life skills and other animal project book from each district
  • Junior, intermediate & senior categories
  • Judged in the summer and awarded at the Regional 4-H Fair
    Due date: July 31

Scholarships

  • Second year and beyond for study
  • Any program area of study
  • Essays required
  • Member from NW region - 3 years
  • Apply through provincial 4-H scholarship
  • Northwest Safety Scholarship
    • three valued at $500, $400 and $400
  • Northwest 4-H Scholarship
    • one valued at $500
  • A.P. (Tony) Lefebvre Memorial Northwest Scholarship
    • One valued at $500. Other criteria for area of study and 4-H project taken
  • Provincial application deadline: May 5
