4-H Odds and Ends Email Blast in the East Central Region

May 2010

Hi,

Here are a few things I missed on my last Odds and Ends - sorry.

East Central Casino
The East Central Region has a casino booked for Wednesday, September 8 and Thursday, September 9 in Red Deer. The proceeds from this casino fund scholarships and member programming in the region. We are looking for people to work at the Casino. If you can help out, please get back to me by return e-mail.

S G Walker Night
S G Walker Night will be held on Tuesday, May 18th at Strome Hall. It starts at 7:30 p.m. In addition to the presentation of the Scholarships for the Flagstaff District, Gord Bamford will be sharing his 4-H experience and the new partnership with 4-H. His CD's - Day Job and Honkytonks and Heartaches will be available to purchase and you can get Gord to autograph them for you! There is no charge to attend.

Host Families Wanted
We are looking for host families for a number of international guests who will be in Alberta this summer. They include:

  • Japanese youth who are between the ages of 12 and 15
  • A Taiwanese lady who is 21 years of age
  • A Korean lady who is 24 years of age
  • A California youth about 16 years of age

If you can host any of these youth or would like more information, please let me know and I'll put you in contact with the person with more information.

Fundraising Options
It is a busy time of year for 4-H members and leaders. Here are some quick tips on how to incorporate fundraising into your upcoming community events or achievement days.

Option 1.
Draw your community to your achievement day or community event by collecting electronics at the event.
-Register for the Electronics Recycling Program
-Review and obtain program details and appropriate paper work for collection
-Designate or develop a schedule for someone(s) to collect and fill out the forms correctly over the day or during the specified time period.
-At the end of the day compile the forms, load the e-waste to prepare to take it to your designated drop off location
-Submit collection forms prior to June 30, 2010 to the 4-H Foundation of Alberta

For more information, check this link:
http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$Department/deptdocs.nsf/all/4h1080/$FILE/FR_ElectronicRecycling.pdf

Option 2
Gord Bamford's brand new CD “DAY JOB” has been released. This CD showcases the 4-H logo and is a very profitable fundraiser for 4-H clubs.
-Order a desired number of CD’s to sell
- Announce they are available during a certain time if desired
- Your club purchases the CD’s for $11 and retail them for $20 = $9 profit!!

Check these links for more info:

http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/4h1080/$FILE/FR_RuralRoots.pdf

http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/4h1080/$FILE/FR_BamfordAlbum.pdf

Proceeds from these fundraisers can be used to fund a year end event, add them to a club charity animal, or make a donation to a local charity in your community. Setting a goal for the proceeds will help you promote and sell the items.

For more information on the above 2 fundraisers/options or more ideas contact the 4-H Foundation of Alberta at foundation@4hab.com or 1-877-682-2153.

They will come to your facility with experienced players, videos, equipment and written materials and work with your leader to ensure a positive experience. Polocrosse is a great discipline for 4-H clubs for a number of reasons, including:
It combines basic western riding maneuvers, stops, turns and rollbacks into fast paced exciting game
It improves riders' horsemanship, to perform well in the game the horse and rider have to move quickly as one.
It raises the horse's training level, you have to practice to be good.
It gives purpose to your riding, the competition of the game puts the fun into riding
It is something different for you, your horse and your friends to do together
Polocrosse is a game that is simple to learn, but takes a lifetime to master."

I have contact information and a link to more information. Get back to me if you are interested.
