Cole Hoeber - Summer Programs Assistant

The summer was great but it seemed like it went by almost too quickly. I had an awesome time staffing the summer programs for the delegates. I hope that all of the youth that attended the 4-H summer programs had a wonderful camp experience and are planning to come back next summer. It was very interesting getting to each person and meet many different personalities. The talent shows were the highlight of my summer. It is great to see so many delegates display their talents in front of their peers. Best of luck to everyone and I hope you all continue on with your 4-H projects.

Put a fork in it cause it's done!

The 34th annual Provincial Beef Heifer show, the first-ever Summer Synergy and 64th annual Provincial Dairy show are now complete folks. It was great to see members from all over Alberta (and even some out of province visitors) competing and cooperating with one another. Congratulations goes out to all those who competed in one or more of the three shows, to those who got scholarships, and to those who tried something new this past week (I know Lindsey Grover learned a thing or two about showing dairy cattle!)

A huge thank-you goes out to the many volunteers who spent countless hours making sure everything was running smoothly, and to the awesome Alberta 4-H Ambassadors (and fellow staff) who made my life 10,000 times easier by being willing to help. You guys rock!

Looking back on this past week I realized that I learned a few things: I had never been to a dairy show before and what an experience that was! I don't know how they manage to get their cattle to behave so well using just their hands. I, personally, am lost without a show stick in my hand. Now, I also know that dairy cows get the best bedding in their stall (I was ready to have a nap alongside them!), Rosie Templeton is kind of intimidating when hypnotized, the Texan judge Caleb does not like our Canadian staples of ketchup chips and poutine, and Spitz and snap peas are not a healthy alternative to eating actual meals.

For me this week of showing and excitement was so much fun, and a great alternative to office work. For any of you who missed out on this year’s activities, mark them down in your calendar right now so you're there next year.

Well that's all for now, hope everyone is having a fantastic summer!

Juniors jump for joy at camp

Immediately following Leadership Through Counselling Seminar (LTCS) at the Alberta 4-H Centre, we had our summer’s first provincial junior camping program at Battle Lake.

The counsellors were all fresh off of LTCS and ready to take on their next challenge, which was 80 junior-aged 4-H members, all of whom were vibrating with energy! We had sunny weather, enthusiastic delegates and a great counselling team.

Overall the week was a success with the highlight being the Slip n’ Slide.  It was great to see every delegate who registered on the first day make it all the way to the end of the program.

Kudos to the counselling team for keeping all of the delegates involved and participating.

Stay tuned for Combined 1 next week!

Hey 4-Hers!

Oh boy, am I ever ready for summer to begin! I’ve got one more week of work in the office in Airdrie, and then I head to Olds for my favorite time of the year: Provincial Beef Heifer Show time (PBHS)! It's like Christmas in July for me! A beautiful combination of cows, kids and sunshine is all it takes to get me excited for the summer.

This year promises to be 1000 times better as I get to partake in the first-ever Summer Synergy show, which combines PBHS and Provincial Dairy Show with the Youth Draft Horse Show and Alberta Junior Beef Breed shows. I haven't been this excited for a cattle show since the first time I attended PBHS as a delegate. Plus, this year is my first year at Provincial Dairy Show, which I am looking forward to immensely. For those of you who sent in applications for any of these shows, be looking out for your confirmation of entry, it should be arriving in your e-mail in the next few days!

Another project of mine is the Youth and Agriculture Stampede Showcase, which is taking place July 13-18 at the Calgary Stampede. The Calgary Stampede wants to have displays from all walks of 4-H at the grounds, which is a great chance for 4-H to strut its stuff and show the public what we are all about (and hopefully attract some new 4-H recruits!). There is still time to get yourselves, your clubs and your district in on this brand new opportunity. If any one would like to sign up, you can e-mail me at myranda.stewart@gov.ab.ca or give me a call at the 4-H Office in Airdrie: 403-948-1521.

Well, that's all for now folks. Hope to see many of you at one of 4-H's exciting summer events!

Regional Assistant Northeast and East Central

I’ve been really busy here in the office, with the help of coffee and cake to keep me going. But when I haven't been busy keeping the local bakeries in business, I've been working on a few summer projects.

The communications camp is going well (more on that to come). I've worn out my thinking cap and succumbed to the dreaded carpal tunnel, but it's all worth it.

I have been working on a safety presentation for one of the summer events as well. If you ever need to know what to put in a horse's First Aid kit or clarification on any WHMIS symbols, hand signals, or ATV safety, I'm pretty well versed in it all. I believe in having fun and therefore, this presentation is going to be the kind that will have delegates having a blast, while still learning.

Right now I'm also creating a new calendar for the Northeast Region, making an interesting mail-out form, and last Wednesday I helped Lindsey Grover, Farm Safety Summer Assistant, teach 6 and 7-year olds about farm safety at the Parkland Conservation Farm near Vegreville.

Ted Andrew - Summer Communications and Marketing Assistant

My last week was filled with delivering the Classroom in Agriculture Presentation (CAP) to grade four students across Edmonton.  I did eight presentations to various schools.

The objective of this program it is to teach urban kids about what living on a farm is all about.  I told the kids a variety of things about agriculture, like what grows on farms, what it is like to live on a farm, etc.  I played a game with them called “Name That Tool,” where I give them a picture of a tool used on a farm (i.e. branding cradle, an electric fence tester, a fence stretcher, etc.) and they had to think of what it was, or what it was possibly used for.  It was kind of humorous when they thought that a livestock paddle was a fly swatter!

But they really took an interest in, and wanted to learn more about, agriculture.  They were full of questions about cows, horses, crops and the like.  When I told them that I lived in a small town, one boy asked me where the closest McDonalds was for me.  When I answered, “about two hours away,” they got really wide-eyed.  They got even wider eyed when I told them what branding was! All in all, it was a great time and I hope that those students learned just how important that they are to agriculture.

In the two months leading up to the start of the summer 4-H programs, I have been running school programs up at the Battle Lake 4-H centre.  These school programs are called “Outdoor Adventure Programs” (or, OAP) and span anywhere from one to three days.  Many of the same activities that happen at 4-H programs take place at our OAP programs, like canoeing, archery, low ropes, leadership, large group games and hikes.  The OAP program is often a final, year-end school activity that allows the kids to get out of the classroom and have fun.  Alongside the school programs we have also started to do programs for company groups who are looking to bond and build leadership skills as a work team, or come for a retreat.

So, this last month has been an absolute whirlwind for me.

Thus far I have been to Ambassador Training, 4-H on Parade, West Central Light Horse Show and Gooseberry Lake 4-H Rodeo (whew!).  At all of these events it’s interesting to see the variety of projects that we have in 4-H.  When I was at 4-H on Parade I saw one club that had cake decorating as their project, and another member who had welded a “Welcome” sign out of a sculpture of a cowboy and cactus that looked really cool.  I’ve also seen a lot of traditional 4-H projects such as beef, horse, dairy, and sheep.  It’s amazing to see that regardless of what kind of project it is, 4-Hers get right into it.

On the office side of things, I am working in Edmonton at the J.G. O’Donoghue Building.  Most of my days are filled with writing press releases, creating text for sponsor packages and contacting people for quotes, interviews, information etc. I’m also organizing a Classroom in Agriculture Presentation for grade four students.  More on that to come.

Happy 4-Hin!

Cole Hoeber - Summer Programs Assistant

The 4-H Summer Staff got off to a good start on the summer by organizing and exploring new and exciting options for summer programs.  We have made a lot of changes and are very excited to implement these changes in the summer programs.  The overall theme for the summer is 4-H “Setting Sail”.  Throughout the summer the delegates will be gaining experience and knowledge to begin and carry on their lifelong journeys.

The 4-H Summer Staff have been searching for a new slip n’ slide for some lucky campers to be the first to use during summer programs.  The slip n’ slide has always been a hit at many different programs.  Everyone has been busy working getting prepared for the programs.  The bus schedules are coming along very smoothly and the Outdoor Adventure Program is finished and should be very exciting.  We are all excited for the many experiences the summer has to bring.

This week I was given the opportunity to plan a new overnight camp for 13 to 16-year olds. Leila and Janet have put their baby in my hands and I'm hoping it doesn't walk away with too much damage.

Basically, I am looking at the objectives and goals for the program and from there I am determining which sessions need to be planned and what activities should be run. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for me as it is forcing me to look at ALL of the areas of program planning, while determining the risk and benefits of the each of the activities that will be run.  I'm slowly building up my “Beginner Binder” for others to use. It's a good time :)
