It’s everywhere we look these days: it’s portrayed on television, taking up the radio airwaves, plastered in the headlines, sent in an email, activated in the click of a mouse. In the streets it’s sleeping under the bridge, it’s the walls put up to keep people out, it’s a war happening half way around the world…it’s war happening in our own back yards.
What do you know about human rights? About protecting your rights? About advocating for the rights of others? How can you transform your experiences and knowledge about human rights into positive action?
Rural Rights: Youth Action and Media Project is about sparking a conversation amongst Alberta youth (ages 14-20) about human rights. It’s time to share what we already know and open our minds to consider new perspectives and possibilities. It’s about building a dialogue, recognizing the challenges and gaining confidence in our abilities as young people to participate in community and make some big changes!
At the Rural Rights Training Weekends in 2010, you’ll have the chance to share what you know, be exposed to a diversity of stories from other youth, challenge discrimination and oppression, and develop the kind of skills you can use anywhere in the world.
…and that’s not all… you’ll choose to learn about the power of alternative radio or magazine writing, and how you and your friends can make your own resources to get your message out there. That means learning how to plan, write, record, create, and produce a radio documentary or edgy ‘zine’ magazine all on human rights.
Participation is $40 (including participation fee, meals, workshop materials, and t-shirt). We have scholarships available, on request.
