Program Description: Horse Classic is three action packed days where members from across the province get together to compare their horse knowledge, attend horse clinics, compete for event prizes and enjoy social activities.
Three headline clinics will be offered (for members and leaders), one on each day of the event.
We encourage clubs to enter as a club. We can accept 200 4-H horse project members for this event. Get your club together and send in an entry. Entries accepted on a first come-first serve basis. Families will be sent a confirmation package including an official program booklet by June 30, 2010.
We invite all 4-H horse project members to come share, enjoy and learn with members from throughout the province. Make these exciting days the time of your life!
Activities
Individuals compete in age categories as of January 1, 2010.
Prizes
Are awarded for individuals and teams in the above age categories. The top four senior members (between 16 and 19 years of age as of January 1, 2010), based on individual points, will be invited to go to the National Western 4-H Horse Classic, Denver, Colorado, January 2011.
Competitions Offered
Team Horse Bowl Contest
It’s the 4-H horse project’s version of “Smart Ask”. Horse Bowls give young people enrolled in the 4-H horse projects a chance to demonstrate their knowledge of equine related subject matter. Clubs may enter teams of four, or if clubs do not have enough members to enter a team or have more members interested, the organizers will put mixed teams together. We allow clubs to enter as many teams as they wish. Please indicate the club team number on the application form.
Marketing Contest
Members may choose to enter in either Oral Marketing or Challenge Marketing but not both.
Oral Marketing - Individual members enter this contest. A marketing contest is an event where members can practice their communication and presentation skills. Contestants will be given a scenario where they try to sell a horse whose history and pedigree is displayed, to the assembled buyers. The buyers will also act as judges. They will evaluate how convincing the member is in promoting the horse. Members compete in contest age categories.
NEW THIS YEAR - Challenge Marketing - Individual members who register in this event will need to do preparation before they arrive at Horse Classic. The prizes will be similar to those in marketing, but with a bonus. Members who enter this event will be sent information about the product or service they ar to sell in the acceptance package so that they can prepare materials to assist them with their presentation to the judges.
Print Marketing Contest
No pre-entry required. A print marketing contest is an event where members can demonstrate their presentation skills and their creative skills. Members are given a scenario where they are challenged to develop a print advertisement for a program, item, animal or person. Members will be evaluated on content and creativity.
Horse Hippology Contest
All members participating in the Provincial 4-H Horse Classic are automatically entered into the horse hippology contest. This contest consists of horse judging and horse husbandry knowledge events. Registered members will be divided into contestant teams of four. We will attempt to have members from different areas of the province on each team. This contest has four phases:
• Quiz/slides
• Horse judging
• Identification stations
• Team problem
