As a member-run program, Alberta 4-H is more than happy to see its members step up to the plate, take initiative and learn to do by doing – after all, how is one ever going to become a leader if they’re never given the opportunity to lead?

Designed for members, ages 15-20, Alberta 4-H’s Key Member program verses delegates in the ways of proficient communication, dynamic programming and workshop planning, effective leadership and successful time management. Not to mention the friends that will be made, the experiences that will be had and the foundation geared toward future success that will be created.

As a Key Member, some main responsibilities are:

  • Event promotion (e.g.: getting the word out about National 4-H Month and Wear Your 4-H Colours Day)
  • Workshop Planning (e.g.: organizing a public speaking workshop or grooming clinic for your fellow club members)
  • Two-way Communication (e.g.: known for their all-star communication skills, Key Members are counted on to pass relevant information on to members of their club, and conversely, relay club members’ feedback to leaders)
  • Resource Go-to (e.g.: Key Members should make themselves known to their club, community and district as an knowledgeable and accessible source of information, ranging in topics from event dates to history of the Alberta 4-H organization – and just as importantly, even if you don’t always know the answers to the questions, you feel confident in knowing where to source the answers from)
  • Mentorship (e.g.: it’s important for junior-aged members to have someone too look up to – remember the person you first looked up to as a junior member? – ask questions of and be inspired by)
  • Help out at a club and district-level

 Application Process

  • Applying to be a Key Member is much like applying for a job because in essence, it is one; therefore, a RESUME and a COVER LETTER must be received by your REGIONAL SPECIALIST no later than March 31, 2010 in order to be considered;
  • Every district council then goes through all of its applicants and one Key Member/ district is selected.
  • Key Members serve one-year terms, with the option of reapplying and being re-chosen;
  • Key Members are strongly encouraged to attend the Key Member training weekend, August 20-23, 2010 in order to meet the crew of newly named Key Members, to become knowledgeable in the ways of the organization, to devise strategies for the upcoming year and to talk out any questions and fears that might exist. And to have a blast.

Please consult the Alberta 4-H website, www.4h.ab.ca, for more information and for the contact information of your Regional Specialist …and in case you don’t know what region you’re in, the website will help with that as well because that’s definitely something you’re going to need to know as a Key Member!

Best of luck and hope to see you at Key Member Training!
