Exchanges
Imagine traveling to a new and wonderful place full of enthusiastic and friendly 4-Hers who are eager to meet and share ideas with you! If the idea of traveling and exchanging cultures, traditions, and ideas interests you, then we invite your regional and district councils to initiate travel to another part of Alberta, Canada, or the United States.
Exchanges provide participants with the opportunity to travel and meet 4-H members from another area with whom they can share their cultures and traditions and 4-H backgrounds. The exchanges are to be organized by a local exchange committee, and should take place either over a two-year period, or through a one-year exchange.

Canadian/Japanese Exchange
The Alberta 4-H/Japanese Exchange Program provides students and their families with an opportunity to learn about another culture, by hosting or traveling to Japan.
Alberta exchanges with three Japanese organizations, Labo, Lex and Utrek. Each organization has a slightly different focus, but the exchange is very similar; helping Japanese young people to improve their English, and promoting world understanding and acceptance of cultural differences. Lifelong friendships are often formed between students, their families and host families, after a month-long summer home stay.

4-H Youth Exchanges Canada
4-H Youth Exchanges Canada is a group reciprocal home stay exchange program intended for Canadians between the ages of 12 and 17. Groups of 10 participants are twinned with groups of youth the same age from another province or territory and take turns staying in each other's homes in July and August.
The exchange lasts at least five days, excluding travel time. Budgets permitting, transportation costs for all eligible participants and organizers are paid by the Government of Canada through the 4-H Youth Exchanges Canada program, while the exchange group covers local transportation and other activity expenses when hosting the twin group.
Various stages of the exchange - preparation, the actual exchange, hosting of the twin group, and follow-up to the exchange - all allow participants an opportunity to become involved in both communities, develop personal skills and learn more about Canada's diversity.

International Exchange Opportunities
Host an International Delegate
During the summer and fall of 2010, Alberta 4-H will be hosting exchange delegates from the United Kingdom, Korea and Taiwan. This means that we will be in need of host families during this period when these delegates come to experience 4-H, agriculture and our way of life in Alberta and Canada. As a host family there is no expectations that you will tour your guest around the province, only that you will welcome our guests and share your family life.
Travel to Korea or Taiwan
Ass part of our reciprocal agreement, Alberta 4-H has the opportunity to send delegates to Korea and Taiwan. During your stay, you will be hosted by local 4-H families, take part in cultural experiences and learn about 4-H and agriculture. Delegates will be responsible for the cost of flights, souvenirs and any other incidentals costs. The majority of accommodations and meals will be covered during your stay. Travel to Korea and Taiwan is directed torwards high school graduates and university aged members and alumni. All interested individuals will be contacted regarding the selection process for the exchange.
Whether you choose to host a delegate or travel overseas, you will be richer through the experience!
If you would like further information or are interested in hosting a delegate, please contact Mark Shand, 4-H Specialist – Programs, at 403-948-8508 or mark.shand@gov.ab.ca.
