2009 Canadian Agricultural Safety Week | Safety Tips 2009
The Canadian Ag Safety Week 2009(CASW) is March 11 to 17, 2009, and Alberta Agriculture's Farm Safety Program is proud to be a part of the national campaign.
"This national campaign is coordinated through the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) and Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) in partnership with Farm Credit Canada (FCC) and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)," says Raelyn Peterson, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Grande Prairie. "This year's theme is Personal Protective Equipment - It only works if you use it! with a focus on the use, fit and access of personal protective equipment (PPE) in agriculture. The Alberta Farm Safety Program uses Canadian Agricultural Safety Week (CASW) as a launching point to for an entire year of activities designed to create awareness and motivate Alberta's farmers to manage their risk and practice farm safety throughout the year."
Alberta Agriculture's Farm Safety Program is helping to promote Canadian Agricultural Safety Week and bring awareness to the issue of farm safety with the following activities:
-
farm safety placemats - watch for them in restaurants during March
-
radio ads - listen for radio ads with a reminder to farm safe
-
articles -weekly papers will have access to many articles that are directly related to the Personal Protective Equipment theme
-
tradeshows - Alberta Farm Safety will be at Ag Expo in Lethbridge, March 4 to 6, and at the Peace Country Classics Agri-Show in Grande Prairie, March 12 to 14, 2009
-
websites - safety information relating to the theme and much more is posted on Ropin' the Web at www.agriculture.alberta.ca/farmsafety
Producers need to have the information required to develop and implement a health and safety plan for their operations. Currently, farmers can access safety information on Ropin' the Web at www.agriculture.alberta.ca/farmsafety. A variety of print publications, CDs, videos and promotional items are available for handout.
"Many of the resources are aimed at rural children who are exposed to many hazards growing up on a farm," says Peterson. "Children between the ages of 4 and 12 years-of-age can join the Farm Safety Kid's Club and receive their very own newsletter full of activities three times per year."
Resources available for educational events include the interactive Farm Safety Hazard Hunt Hazard Display and the Gravity Flow Wagon, a miniature grain wagon that teaches children about the dangers of flowing grain.
Resources for older youth and adults are also available from the Farm Safety Program. The Farm Safety - It's No Accident CD/ DVD provides a great tool for on-farm learning especially for young or new farmers who need safety education. The Quick'n Dirty, A Short Guide to Farm Survival provides basic safety combined with handy conversion charts, useful knots and hand signals. The Safety Up campaign is aimed at youth and uses eye catching graphics and age relevant messages to remind them to stay safe for the good times.

'Skid Lids' Save Lives
The picture of a farmer wearing a ball cap could soon be replaced with a hardhat. Skid lid, brain bucket, noggin wrapper, skull shell - call it what you like - just as long as ag-workers wear one.
