Program Description:


NORTHWEST REGION 4-H FAIR - Thorhild Central School**  Thorhild, Alberta - SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 2018

The 4-H Fair is open to all 4-H members and adults.  There are sessions specifically for Cleaver Kids.   Any club in the Northwest Region is eligible to send registrations to the Fair. The Thorhild District welcomes you!

9:00 – 9:30 a.m. Registration – Morning snack, meet and greet games, deliver exhibit entries

*Please tag Bench Show items before arrival (make as many copies of the last page as needed)

9:30 – 10:00 a.m.   Welcome and introductions, group photo

10:00 – 11:45 a.m. Judging of Fair Exhibits

10:00 – 11:45 a.m. Workshop Session # 1

11:45 – 1:15 p.m.   Lunch, Bench Show Viewing

1:15 – 3:00 p.m.     Workshop Session # 2

3:00 – 4:00 p.m.     Awards, Evaluations, Snacks and Wrap Up



Please register each person on a separate form and then submit them with a club cheque or money order made payable to: Northwest Regional 4-H Life Skills and Other Animals Committee. Entry deadline is March 10, 2018.


The fee for each member in attendance (CK, Jr, Int, Sr) is $20. This includes two workshops and lunch. Each adult in attendance must also pay a $20 fee.  A couple of the adult sessions have an additional fee to help cover the material cost.

Cleaver Kid Workshops

We will be running two cleaver kids sessions; one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  Sessions will include – make a t-shirt using sticky precut vinyl lettering, using Perler Beads make your own keepsake key chain, and other projects. 

Adult Workshops

Herb Garden – Join the Farm Greenhouse for a session on building, planting and growing your own indoor herb garden.   *** additional charge - $30.00 to cover materials and plants.

3 Foot Vertical Sign (am only) – Create your own 3’ FARMHOUSE sign.  Learn how to apply vinyl lettering and different painting techniques to create the look you want.  ***additional charge - $20 to cover materials

Family Picture Holder (pm only) Create a custom design holder for your pictures.  Learn how to apply vinyl lettering and different painting techniques to create a one of kind home décor piece. ***additional charge - $20 to cover materials

Am/pm – Yoga – Enjoy an hour of physical, mental and spiritual practices that originated in India.  Yoga can be relaxing, decreases stress, or a slow stretch and exercise program.  Come and work out with our instructor! Please bring your own yoga mat. ***additional charge - $7.00/adult

Am/pm - Pasta Making – Learn how to make your own from scratch delicious pasta!

Life Skills Record Book Judging Workshop (am only) - A chance to review the Record Book Guidelines and ask any questions.  This is open to all leaders, parents and community members.  Please invite anyone who will be judging record books for your club this year or in the future.

Life Skills Project/Bench Show Judging Workshop (pm only) – Learn the basics of organizing and setting up a Bench Show – categories and divisions.  Then learn what a judge is looking for!

Pick My Brain – This is an opportunity to chat with Stacy Murray (Regional 4-H Specialist), and maybe a key leader or two, and ask those burning questions you have had about all things 4-H!

Help out in a Member session – (am or pm) – If you are not participating in an adult session, the instructors for the members’ sessions would really appreciate any extra help you can give them.  There will be a sign-up sheet for volunteers to help in the session rooms.

Jr/Int/Sr Member Workshops

Am only – Dog Leash – Using three strands of paracord, braid a Leash for you dog using a special technique!  Your dog will love it!

Pm only – Dog basis 101 – Learn some basic commands and training techniques for your furry friend.

Am/pm – Chocolate Making – Learn the art of chocolate making!

Am/pm – Reverse Canvas – Undo a purchased framed canvas, add a vinyl sticky slogan – and reframe using the original frame!!! Wow! Great results!

Am/pm – Pebble Art – Pebble art is a unique way to display and keep your favourite stones.  Create an image out of pebbles, twigs, moss, flowers etc.  They will be the talk of the home as they are displayed in your 5x7 picture frame.  

Am/pm – Gardening Tips & Tricks – Everything you ever wanted to know about gardening.  How to read a seed catalogue, knowing your soil, bugs – good and bad, pollination.   

Am/pm – Mini Fairy Garden – Choose from a mini container, 2-3 fairy accessories, rocks and plants to create your own “Fairy Garden”!

Am/pm – Spring Floral Wreath – With a willow Wreath, silk floral sprays, and a hot glue gun, create a beautiful Spring Floral Wreath for your door or walk!

Am/pm – Stained Slogan Wooden Sign – Choose a precut slogan cut on transparency film.  With acrylic paint, a foam brush, dob the slogan on the wooden plaque, then stain overall!!  Fantastic rustic results!

Am/pm – Bird Houses – Build your own bird houses.  Pieces will be pre-cut and members will have the opportunity to put them together and create their own special place for birds to nest.  Great for our junior and intermediate members. 

Am/pm – Household Toxicity for Cats & Dogs – Power point presentation and a question answer session learning about household toxics that are dangerous to your pets!  Learn the dangers!

Am/pm – Soldering 4-H Ribbon – Learn the skill of soldering on a 4-H metal ribbon.  Watch as the solder joins the metal points together to get a real “Bling” result!  Such a surprising finish!

Am/pm – Manicures – A great session on how to give a manicure and proper nail care.  You will learn how to push cuticles, apply nail polish with base coat.  To finish it off how to give a hand massage. 

4-H Fair Bench Show Competition 2018

4-H members in attendance are encouraged to enter.  Entries are limited to one per class.  Categories are: Cleaver Kid (6-8), Junior (9-11), Intermediate (12-14), and Senior (15-20), based on age on January 1/18.  Entries should have been made within the past year.  Danish judging will be used.
