S - Regional - Regional Communications Competition

Start Date: March 16, 2019 11:30 AM End Date: March 16, 2019 6:00 PM
Location: Lethbridge College IB Building, Lethbridge, Alberta

Program Description:

Check in by 11:30 am with the competition starting at 12:00 noon

Start time is 12 noon sharp so please (speakers, volunteers, etc.) be checked in absolutely no later than 11:30 am.  Each district has a contact person, with information about the event but a reminder to each speaker (and parents) - please bring a (labelled for ingredients) item for the snack table.  Many districts may be still seeking volunteers for roles in their assigned rooms – judges, timers, etc.  Please see last month’s scoop for the different district contact people and connect – members also have the opportunity to be involved in some roles like timers, registration, room M.C.’s etc. so if you are interested please connect! It’s also a great event to learn more about perfecting your own communication skills by seeing what others have done. Questions about the competition may be addressed to the Regional Communications Committee (Shari Wehlage 403-647-2182, Lorelei Bexte 403-534-9120 or Wendy-Ellen Nittel 403-527-0469).  The lead for this year’s Host district (Cardston) is Cheyenne Smith (403-394-4296 mcb.smith@hotmail.com ) so please remember to send her all of the information about the district’s advancing speakers.

There are four levels of competition (club, district, regional and provincial). The top members at each competition advance to the next level. Advancing to regional or provincial competitions is a very big accomplishment as there are approximately 2,000 people competing in each age category (junior 9-11 intermediate 12-14, senior 15+). Members are judged and receive feedback at each level of competition. They are also encouraged to evaluate their speeches or presentations to make improvements each time they deliver it. Members who advance to the provincial public speaking competition are required to write a new speech based on a theme or topic they are provided with.
